When we started, our goal was simply to gather, spend time outside and focus on character education. Since then, we have embraced the influence of Charlotte Mason, a British educator in the late 19th century by creating a robust offering designed to enrich the lives of the homeschooling families in our community.
Mason was a strong Christian believer and built her educational model on her beliefs that a child is a born person, fully capable of taking the "feast set before him" and relating to it. She believed in educating the whole person, mind, body and spirit and in the importance of training them in the habits of attention and obedience gently and respectfully.
She also believed that children under the age of six should be outdoors often and allowed abundant time to play. Both of our programs reflect this philosophy and offer a gentle precursor to formal academics.
Children older than six still spend majority of their time outside and if enrolled in our Farm School, they will spend the entire day connecting with the natural world around them.
Miss Mason believed that the role of the teacher is to expose the child to beautiful literature, and the arts, and to spend time in the Lord’s creation. Through these rich experiences, we directly connect the child to God and nourish their soul with living ideas.
We offer this through two different enrichment programs:
Cottage School - character education, literature, memory work & recitation, social studies, geography, culture & art, earth science and more
Farm School- character education, nature study, animal husbandry, practical life skills, hands on learning and more
